Novelist Henry Miller once said about Greece: "In one-way or another, at some time or other, we have all been there, even if only in a dream". This quote perfectly captures the spirit of Greece. Greece is situated in the Eastern Mediterranean with a coastline of 17,000 km, the most extensive of all other Mediterranean countries. It has short, mild winters and long warm summers with an average of 300 days of sun a year, when Greece is ablaze with vibrant colours.

The capital of Greece is Athens with an average population of 3million. It is a cosmopolitan city and host of the 28th Olympiad from 13 to 29 August 2004. The second largest is Thessaloniki in northern Greece, Cultural Capital of Europe in 1997 and the third largest is Patra in the Peloponnese the designated European Cultural City for 2006.

Greece is a land of breathtaking beauty with 21 rivers and 18 mountain ranges as well as unspoilt forests and lakes, all this in addition to its modern infrastructure boasting 26 international airports, over 20 ports, a contemporary metro and tram systems and finally an efficient road network spanning over the whole length of the country by connecting 14 cities, nine ports and airports.

As the birthplace of some of the greatest figures in the world from Alexander the Great to Socrates and Aristotle, Greece is made up of myths, playful gods and protagonists of many modern sciences like medicine and politics.

The creation of the modern Greek state, as we know it today was established in 1828, following a revolutionary struggle against the Turks in 1821. In the present day, Greece enjoys political stability and economic growth and has been an EU member since 1981.
