Patras is the capital of the Peloponnese and the third largest city in Greece. It has been designated the Cultural Capital of Europe for 2006. It is a major centre linking the county with Italy and the Ionian islands. Patras hosts one of the most famous carnivals in the world and it takes place prior to the Lent season. Patras is one of the Olympic cities and is home to the largest suspension bridge in the world linking the Peloponnese to the mainland. The Olympic flame will cross the bridge on its journey to Athens for the opening ceremony of the 28th Olympiad.
