Attica
In Attica, the human body was revered as the vehicle for the soul, beauty as the prerequisite for virtue, free speech as the basis for living together equal rights as the source of democracy.
The capital of Attica and of the country is Athens. The city was named after Athena, the Goddess of wisdom and education. Since antiquity the city was the centre of Greece and today this is no exception.
Athens is the city of the Olympic Idea of free speech, peace and freedom. In 2004 only the Olympic Games will be returning home making the city, the ideal Olympic host due to its heritage.
Attica is not only Athens, however. There are a number of other places to explore and enjoy from the majestic Cape Sounion to the sophisticated Athenian Riviera and the picturesque Saronic Gulf islands. Attica has a special place in the Greek history and in particular the ancient periods.
In the prefecture of Attica you can also find Piraeus, the most important port of Greece and Athens’ largest suburb. Piraeus has been the centre of maritime industry for the last hundred years. It has kept its traditional colour especially evident in Kastella, the City’s Theatre and the Titanios Garden.
