Rethimno

The area of Rethimno with its diverse landscape of imposing gorges, green valleys, rivers and long sandy beaches is a must for every visitor. It is the mountains, though, which play the most important role in the morphology of the area as they give it its special character. Apart from the areas of natural beauty and ancient sites, Rethimno’s Venetian heritage is apparent in some of its famous buildings including the Great Gate dating back to 1540, The Loggia built in the mid-16th century a social club where lords and noblemen of the time used to meet and relax. Now it houses the local archaeological museum, the Rimondi Fountain circa 17th century. The Fortezza built in 1574 offers marvellous views of the city and finally the churches of San Francesco and Our Lady of the Angels are worth a visit. The region has unique fauna and flora including 160 endemic species of plants like Cretan Cyclamen, Iris Cretica, Tulipa orphanidea and many types of orchids. As for the fauna, the famous Caretta Caretta turtles lay their eggs on a number of protected beaches on the island. Rethimno is ideal for those who want to exercise after a long conference. The natural beauty of the region lends itself to walking tours and mountaineering excursions.
