Rest of Dodecanese

find

Apart from the most popular islands of Rhodes and Kos, the rest of the islands have something different to offer the visitors. Patmos, Halki, Leros and Kalymnos are delightful without being crowded, whereas the lesser known Karpathos, Nisiros, Kastellorizo and Kasos are ideal from where to experience the peaceful and traditional island life.

Patmos was referred to as “The Jerusalem of the Aegean” in a 5th century inscription. It was here that St.John was exiled between 95 and 87 A.D and was inspired to write the Book of Revelation or Apocalypse. In September 1995 the monastery built for his honour celebrated the anniversary of1900 years from the date the Apocalypse was written.

Leros is an island of small fertile valleys sandwiched between rolling green hills, picturesque coves and pretty beaches. The important town on the island is the capital Agia Marina with its collection of small white houses, neoclassical buildings and narrow alleyways. A Byzantine castle built by the Knights of St.John in the 14th century dominates it.

Kalimnos has a long tradition in sponge fishing. Castles, fortress ruins, archaeological sites and old churches bear witness to the continuous importance of Kalimnos in the history of the Aegean. Its capital town Pothia was founded in 1850 and today it still holds its traditional character with its brightly coloured houses that surround the port like seats in an amphitheatre.

Karpathos is the second largest island of the Dodecanese and lies between Rhodes and Crete. The island is famous for its beaches including Finiki, Amfiarti, Agia Irini and Agios Nikolaos.

The rest of the islands including Astypalea, Kassos, Symi, Nissyros and the smaller ones, as Halki, Pserimos are dotted in the Aegean like beautiful jewels. The best way to experience these islands is by a cruise that usually depart from Rhodes.
