The Byzantine Emperor Justinian founded Ioannina in 527 A.D. The city is built on a hillside 500 metres above Lake Pamvotis. Its scenic landscapes and historic monuments make sightseeing a fascinating experienced. In addition, traditional crafts include jewellery making and wood carving which can be observed by visitors. Ioannina has three major museums – Archaeological, Municipal and Folk Art - with their collections dedicated to the local area, its culture and history. No visit to Ioannina will be complete without visiting Nissaki (an inlet in the middle of the lake) with its two major sites of the Philanthropion (Philanthropy) Monastery with its Byzantine Frescoes and the Pre Revolutionary Museum.
