Arta is built along the banks of the Arahthos River and at the foot of the Peranthi hill on the site of ancient Amvrakia, a Corinthian colony. The town has its own ambiance and many attractions for visitors including a number of Byzantine churches mostly dating back to the 13th century and a castle that overlooks it.
