Macedonia-Thrace has a 4,000 year history and civilisation. It is a land famous for its culture, art and myths that are evident in the archaeological sites like Vergina where the tombs of Phillip II were discovered, in its many Byzantine churches culminating in Mouth Athos and ancient theatres still staging some of the best known of Greek dramas. Its natural environment is renowned throughout the country due to its diversity with its high mountains, glittering lakes fauna and flora make it a region not to be missed. Due to its landscape the area offers a number of sporting activities for visitors from alpine skiing to scuba diving. However, nature lovers can also enjoy the Macedonia-Thrace as it has many species of fauna and flora endemic to the province especially in the areas of Megali and Mikri Prespa the two lakes that have a large concentration of birdlife.
