Samos
Samos is one of the most easterly Aegean islands renowned for its award winning white Muscat wine. The island is the birthplace of many philosophers and mathematicians of antiquity with its most famous son being Pythagoras. It was here Pythagoras conceived his theorem and proved that geometry and musical structure are closely related. Visitors can visit Pithagorio, named after Samos’s ancient celebrity, Pythagoras, is a small picturesque port occupying the site of the ancient capital.
The capital of the island is Samos Town or Vathi that has kept its individual appearance with its attractive neoclassical houses, old mansions with pastel facades. The town has two major museums; the Archaeological with a display of ancient sculptures including the celebrated Kouros of Samos and the Byzantine with heirlooms from Samian monasteries.
The island is easily accessible from both Athens as the island has an airport.
