Preveza stands at the entrance to the Amvrakian Gulf very near the site of the ancient Nikopolis. Today Preveza with its charming Venetian castle, neoclassical buildings and scenic surroundings is an ideal base from where to explore the area.

Sites around Preveza to visit include:

· Parga 64 kms from Preveza is a small pretty town amphitheatrically built around a cove. The Venetian castle and the church of Agii Apostoll are worth a visit.

· The Roman Emperor Augustus founded Nikolopolis situated 8 kms from Preveza in the first century B.C. to commemorate his victory over Anthony and Cleopatra in the battle of Actium in 31 B.C. The Odeon is restored to good condition and is today used for drama performances and other cultural events during the summer months.

· The Oracle of the Dead situated 53 kms from Preveza.

· Kassopi is one of the best-conserved ancient cities in Greece and is situated 20 kms north of Nikopolis.

· The Amvrakian Wetlands is a double delta of the Louros and Arahthos rivers forming a very rare ecostystem for birds and animals including herons, dolphins, sea turtles. The area is protected under the RAMSAR international convention.
